X-Mode – offers confidence and control on difficult terrain, on Lineartronic™ Continuously Variable Transmission models
It is interesting that Subaru has put a X Mode on the new 2014 Forester. According to one preview when you push the X Mode button it holds lower gear ratios, activates hill descent control, deactivates the transmission's lock-up clutch and puts traction control on high alert. It is supposed to disengage at 25 mph. How much more capable do you think the Forester will be as compared to the Outback with the addition of X Mode? Also looking at the few interior pictures that have been released, is it just me or do the rear seats fold completely flat with the cargo area as compared to the 2013 Forester which has an angle. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
Yes, they fold flat. X-MODE is basically a manual override to tell the system you need extra traction NOW (given the speed limit for the system) instead of waiting for the VDC do it's normal logic process before it brakes individual wheels to prevent wheel spin. VDC still has a job to do and still does it, x-MODE just engages it faster and makes it work together with the transmission and engine. So with x-MODE on the engine isn't doing one thing, the transmission another, and the VDC isn't out in the lake swimming with no care in the world. With x-MODE on they work together and concentrate on traction. See the below video to cement the process in. Just look at the pictures even if it is in Japanese.
